Grow A Writer
A supportive writing contest & program that helps Ottawa youth build confidence, communication skills, and creative expression through.
Why writing matters
A safe place to find your voice
Writing gives young people a way to express themselves, build confidence, and be heard. The Grow A Writer (GAW) Contest is designed to support youth through structured writing opportunities, supported by volunteer-led workshops and mentorship
Through guided prompts, optional sharing, and individualized feedback, participants build practical writing and communication skills. Post-contest, youth can continue developing through volunteer-led workshops in partnership with Baico Publishing, supporting ongoing growth, mentorship, and confidence.

How it works
What youth can expect
Each cycle is built to be welcoming, practical, and strengths-based—so every participant can grow at their own pace.
1) Welcome & goal-setting
Participants are introduced to the contest with clear guidelines and encouragement to set personal goals, such as strengthening their writing skills, building confidence, or expressing their creativity through storytelling.
2) Guided workshops
Short lessons and prompts help youth practice storytelling, journaling, and clear communication—supported by mentors and facilitators.
3) Mentorship & feedback
Participants receive encouragement and constructive feedback, plus optional one-to-one check-ins to support progress and wellbeing.
4) Share & celebrate
Youth can share work in a low-pressure way (read aloud, display, or private reflection). We celebrate growth, effort, and resilience.
Skills youth build
Confidence that carries into school and life
